Development has traditionally been driven by a need for more housing and the developers' desire for increased profits. When this results in a sprawled city dependent on the automobile, or in homes placed in forests that traditionally are subject to wildfires, it becomes unsustainable. What would it take to make planning for sustainability a consistent piece of the development process? The graduate-level 'Planning for Sustainable Development' free OpenCourseWare is appropriate for all interested in urban planning, social change and environmental issues.

Planning for Sustainable Development: Course Description

'Planning for Sustainable Development,' a free OpenCourseWare offering, is a working course with a real goal. The only assignment is a group project that aims to help Cambridge meet its climate change initiative goals. Professors David Laws and Martin Rein frame the process of planning sustainability as one involving substantial change. The problem (and its solution) are simply too big and too urgent to be tackled by top-down regulation. In this course you will learn about communities of practice and the alliances that create and support change. Examples presented are as local as the MIT campus and as international as the Earth Charter or the Kyoto Protocol.

Lecture notes are minimal, consisting of a bulleted overview and outside links. Two sample final projects and an extensive list of sustainability links. Get a sense of the scope of the problem facing sustainable developers and learn more about this course by visiting the planning for sustainable development course page.
