Special Studies in Urban Studies and Planning: Economic Development Planning Skills: Course Description

Through this free OpenCourseWare, students in urban planning and economics are introduced to various analytical tools that will prove invaluable as they begin devising economic development plans. This includes utilizing secondary economic data as a means of profiling local and regional economies and examining industry and the retail and commercial real estate markets to gauge the potential for growth. Students also learn how to identify and evaluate an area's resource base to determine strengths and weaknesses in finance, human capital, labor force, land and infrastructure, organization and technology. They then define ways to maximize these resources in order to meet economic development goals. MIT Professor Karl Seidman guides this graduate-level course.

Readings, lecture notes, assignments, data files and student projects are available for free online. If you're interested in taking this course, visit the Special Studies in Economic Development Planning Skills course page.
