Sustainable Economic Development: Course Description

Environmental issues linked to economic development are becoming increasingly important to developers, policy-makers, business owners and citizens. Sustainability and pollution control have now become a crucial aspect of community development planning. In this OpenCourseWare from MIT's Department of Urban Studies and Planning, students will study the strategies used to minimize pollution and other environmental risks and salvage vacant and contaminated sites. Students will be able to test sustainable development concepts and different planning techniques to specific communities. The 'Sustainable Economic Development' OpenCourseWare pushes students to identify community goals and formulate planning agendas. Students are also encouraged to understand the long-lasting social impact their work may have and reflect on possible challenges they may face. Professors Karl Seidman and William Shutkin from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology teach this graduate-level course.

Lecture notes, a list of suggested readings, project ideas and class assignments are all available online. To learn more about this free OpenCourseWare, visit the sustainable economic development course page.
