Principles of Autonomy and Decision Making: Course Description

The robotic exploration of distant planets--much like the Mars Rover missions--remains one of the most economical and effective means of learning about extraterrestrial objects. However, using robot agents to collect data in harsh conditions brings up a slew of challenges, from conducting self-repairs to programming effective orienteering and search algorithms. This free course introduced concepts from operations research and artificial intelligence to meet the challenges of remotely controlled robots. Students in the original course gained experience in creating decision-making and optimization programs in Java. This class is designed for undergraduate and graduate students in Aerospace Information Technology, though the programming concepts may be of interest to computer science students as well. Professors Brian Williams and Nicholas Roy taught this lecture format class.

'Principles of Autonomy and Decision Making' OpenCourseWare provides a reading list, links to Java programming reference guides, lecture outlines, class project guidelines, programming assignments and past midterms and finals with solutions. If you are interested in artificial intelligence (AI) and how it can be used to make remotely operated space vehicles, please visit the AI, operations research and the Mars Rover course page.
