Management Communication for Undergraduates: Course Description

Business leadership requires effective verbal and written communication, both one-on-one and in group settings. 'Management Communication for Undergraduates' builds these vital skills as they apply to the business world, balancing emphasis between talking and listening components of communication. Strategies presented are backed up with research. Projects encourage students to practice the communications techniques from class in an outside environment. Assignments encourage practicing both written and verbal communication in a variety of business scenarios, and choosing which communications media is most appropriate for the situation. Study guides provide templates and guidelines for common types of business communication, such as employment cover letters and difficult conversations with superiors and subordinates. As the course is targeted at undergraduates aspiring to management careers, special emphasis is placed on interviewing skills and teamwork strategies. 'Management Communication for Undergraduates' was taught as a seminar and collaborative workshop class at Massachusetts Institute of Technology by Lori Breslow, as part of the MIT Sloan bachelor's degree program in Management Science. This OpenCourseWare is also available in Spanish.

The seminar OpenCourseWare includes written assignments, problem sets, textbook and supplementary reading citations, concept study guides, presentation slides and lecture notes. Download course materials at the business communications course page.
