The University of Alabama Review

The University of Alabama is a student-centered research university and the largest of three colleges in Tuscaloosa, AL. It offers over 200 degree programs at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels; majors with the most graduates in 2008 include finance, marketing, business administration, accounting, public relations, nursing and psychology.

University of Alabama Overview

Alabama's first public college, the University of Alabama was founded in 1831 with 52 students and seven buildings. The university now enrolls more than 28,000 students and the campus has over 60 buildings.

U.S. News and World Report consistently ranks the University of Alabama among the top 50 public universities; in 2008 the university ranked as the 11th public university for enrollment of National Merit Scholars. The National Alumni Association annually awards almost $2.5 million in scholarships to approximately 900 University of Alabama students.

Admissions and Enrollment Overview

Freshmen applicants must send in a completed official University of Alabama application with application fee. Students wishing to be considered for a scholarship must also fill out the application for scholarships. For either application, students may either apply online or download a printable form. Students must also arrange for SAT or ACT scores (including writing scores) to be sent, as well as the most recent high-school transcript.

Campus Facilities and Learning Environment

The University of Alabama inlcudes more than 35 research centers and facilities in which a large number of research projects are always in progress. The university has nine libraries with more than seven million items.

Among the university colleges, the average student to faculty ratio is 19:1. About 16% of the university's classes have a maximum of nine students, whereas only six percent have 100 or more students.
