The 'Magnetic Materials' course offered by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston is a sophisticated, graduate-level presentation of magnetic properties, including magnetostatics, domain walls, magnetic domains, magnetic anisotropy, processes of irreversible and reversible magnetization and magnetic recording. MIT is sharing some of the information for this class online in the form of OpenCourseWare. Engineers who are pursuing advanced work or an advanced degree in this field, such as a master's in Material Science and Engineering, may be interested in this free resource.

Magnetic Materials: Course Description

'Magnetic Materials' OpenCourseWare explores magnetic materials and the understanding of the phenomena of magnetism at increasing degrees of expertise. The original course was designed for students who have already learned differential calculus, introductory atomic physics and quantum mechanics of solids. Magnetic materials characteristics are looked at in the setting of associated effects on other materials. An example would be ferromagnetism being likened to ferroelectricity. Dr. Robert O'Handley wrote the original MIT course and the accompanying textbook, Modern Magnetic Materials, Principles and Applications. 'Magnetic Materials' OpenCourseWare is part of the materials science and engineering field of study. The original course was given in a lecture format.

Materials for MIT's 'Magnetic Materials' OpenCourseWare include assignments (problems sets plus solutions), two sample exams and five sample projects, all of which can be downloaded from the site as well as readings and a textbook list.
