Chinese II (streamlined): Course Description

MIT's Foreign Languages and Literatures Department offers this lecture course to students. Professors Tong Chen and Jin Zhang developed this 'Chinese II (streamlined)' course as part of a series for second-generation Chinese students who have picked up some spoken Mandarin, but haven't learned comparable writing skills. However, this class also covers some spoken Chinese, and is appropriate for students who have no experience with the Chinese language aside from the previous course in the sequence. 'Chinese II (streamlined)' students learn to read the simplified characters that are standard in the PRC, as well as the traditional characters that are still used in Taiwan. They also practice elementary grammar patterns and begin writing short essays in Chinese.

This OpenCourseWare includes downloadable character assignments, a calligraphy grid and links to multiple course-related resources. If you are interested in taking this free course, visit the beginning Mandarin Chinese course page.
