Chinese II (regular): Course Description

Knowledge of the Chinese language is highly prized today, and MIT's 'Chinese II (regular)' lecture course helps graduate and undergraduate students from all academic majors learn the fundamentals of this widely-spoken language. 'Chinese II (regular)' was designed by Julian K. Wheatley as a follow-up course that builds on the reading, writing and conversational skills introduced in Chinese I. This course introduces more advanced vocabulary and grammar, and it also includes intensive pronunciation practice that focuses on helping students to differentiate the four tones. 'Chinese II (regular)' teaches writing using both traditional and simplified characters and the correct stroke order. 'Chinese II (regular)' also familiarizes students with writing system basics like radicals, which allows them to use a Chinese-English dictionary. Another aim of the 'Chinese II (regular)' curriculum is to provide students with a realistic sense of the challenges and rewards associated with learning Chinese, and to help them build the skills that are necessary for independent study.

'Chinese II (regular)' OpenCourseWare includes downloadable course readings, audio files, practice exams, Chinese rhymes and songs and a Chinese writing grid template. If you're interested in taking this free online Chinese course, visit the beginning Chinese language course page.
