Spatial Database Management and Advanced Geographic Information Systems: Course Description

This free course covers spatial information, which includes the location and shape of geographical features and the relationship of those features with one another. Instruction explores how this data is classified and stored in spatial databases, which are invaluable to planners as they manage and develop urban areas. This free OpenCourseWare provides basic skills in spatial database management, analysis of spatial data and networking. Most work is hands-on and allows students to utilize real-world data, images and maps, database software, geographic information systems and web-based tools. 'Spatial Database Management and Advanced Geographical Information Systems' is applicable to the Master of Urban Planning and Studies program and guided by MIT Professors Joseph Ferreira Jr. and Lorlene Hoyt.

Readings, lecture notes, lab exercises, problem sets, a practice and open-book examination, final project specifications and an in-depth introduction to structured query language are available for free online.
