Marshall University Review

Marshall's primary campus is located in Huntington, West Virginia, near the borders of Ohio, Kentucky and Virginia. The university has secondary campuses in Beckley, Gilbert, Logan, Point Pleasant and South Charleston. Marshall offers certificate, undergraduate and graduate programs in liberal arts, science, engineering, business, health science and education.

Marshall University Overview

Named for John Marshall, the fourth U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice, the university offers two associate degree programs, 44 baccalaureate programs, 30 graduate certificate programs and 48 graduate programs to its 14,000 students.

Four out of five students hail from West Virginia, and men outnumber women 3:2. Marshall's sports teams compete in Conference USA of the NCAA's premier division, and many of the 14 varsity teams enjoy nationwide fame. Students actively participate in 25 intramural sports and six club sports, and there are nearly 200 recognized student organizations. Thanks to abundant emergency phones and conspicuous security patrols, Marshall has earned a reputation as one of the safest universities in the country.

Admissions and Enrollment Overview

High school graduates with a 2.0 GPA and non-graduates who have successfully completed a GED exam can apply to full- or part-time undergraduate programs. Non-degree students may enroll in courses, but after 30 credits must apply to a degree program in order to continue.

Financial assistance is readily available. Seven out of ten undergraduates receive grants, loans, academic scholarships and/or on-campus student jobs.

A New Student seminar offers freshmen and new transfer students a peer group and mentor to ease the transition to college life, and a free tutoring service assists any Marshall students who want help with their writing.

Campus Facilities and Learning Environment

Marshall maintains ten undergraduate residential facilities, including two new halls exclusively for freshmen. A recent modernization effort added a new recreation center, engineering lab, medical school clinical facility, nursing addition and biotechnology science center.

The university partners with 200 different colleges in North America for student exchanges, and students can apply to study abroad at 163 sites in 38 countries. Those interested in community service can inquire at the Office of Volunteer Services.
