Inclusive Education: Knowing What We Mean: Course Description

Those using this free OpenLearn course will encounter several different viewpoints regarding the controversial topic of educational inclusion, in which special needs students and students without special needs learn together. They will compare medical and social models of disability and explore how these models have influenced and shaped current thinking about educational inclusion. They also will see how definitions of educational inclusion have broadened to include not just those with mental or physical disabilities but also students from certain ethnic or linguistic groups and those from financially disadvantaged homes. Students of this course will learn the difference between integration and inclusion. They also will review the Salamanca Statement, a report of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization that called for educational inclusion for all disabled children.

Activities and a list of references are available for free online. If you're interested in taking this course, visit the inclusive education course page.
