Technology Policy Organizations: Course Description

'Technology Policy Organizations' and its follow-up course, 'Technology Policy Negotiations and Dispute Resolution' form MIT's Organizational Processes in Technology Policy sequence, giving students tools to identify and adapt to changes in technology policy. 'Technology Policy Organizations' focuses on types of organizations most likely to impact and be impacted by shifts in public sentiment. leading to new policies that alter the business environment. These include NGOs, small businesses, research and development firms and international corporations. Options for dealing with the potential changes are explored, emphasizing management and leadership techniques to guide employees, teams and entire organizations through the process of adapting to changes brought about by evolving technology policy. Lectures show how to apply the broad classes of managerial skills like motivation, mentorship and teamwork to the evolving world of the technology sector. Written assignments encourage students to explore the impact of changing policies on existing organizations in the technology sector. The assignments as formulated for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology course taught in 1995 by professor Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld require group collaboration, but can be easily adapted for individual study in the OpenCourseWare format.
