After earning a master's degree in speech-language pathology, speech therapists help people with vocal problems like stuttering, harsh vocal tone or an unwanted accent. A bachelor's degree in speech therapy helps you prepare for graduate work, and an associate's degree trains people to become speech therapist assistants. The University of Maryland, University of North Texas and Brigham Young University are just three of many schools where you can study speech therapy.

Details of Speech Therapy Degree Programs

Associate of Applied Science in Speech-Language Pathology Assistant

An associate's degree in a speech language pathology assisting program prepares you to work as an assistant to a licensed speech therapist, also called a speech language pathologist. You can help with screenings to identify potential patients who need help with stuttering, vocal tone problems or other speech disorders, as well as aiding the speech therapist in carrying out treatment plans for children and adults.

Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Science

A bachelor's degree gives you basic courses in speech therapy topics, like phonetics, speech disorders and language acquisition. This pre-professional degree prepares you to pursue a master's degree so you can become a speech therapist.

Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology

With a master's degree in speech therapy or speech-language pathology, you can become a speech therapist. You'll take courses in language disorders, physical speech problems like cleft palate and medical aspects of speech therapy. You will also perform clinical rotations in which you'll be supervised as you practice working with patients.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Speech-Language Pathology

Doctoral degrees in speech therapy are for those who wish to conduct research into speech and language disorders or to become professors of speech therapy at universities. You would take some classroom courses, perhaps some clinical rotations, and some laboratory coursework that introduces you to research.
