Speech Classes Online: Overview of Topics Covered in an Online Speech Class
Online speech courses are usually taken through a format where students make use of computer software, in-class demonstrations and group communication. These classes teach students the theories and practices of public speaking to promote competence in communications in interpersonal, small group and public speaking situations.
Online Speech Course Overview
Online speech classes are meant to develop a student's communication skills in order to meet professional, educational and personal needs. Students learn to relate effectively to others, improve their speaking and listening skills in public communication situations and understand and eliminate the barriers to effective communication.
Online speech classes are usually offered in a hybrid format, which combine both live classroom and online exercises. Online studey will be in the form of discussion boards, exercises, quizzes and individual assignments. Students may need access to a video camera so they can submit videos of their speeches through online discussion boards. Because speech courses are meant to test oral skills, students will likely participate in some online discussions through headsets plugged into their personal computers from home.
Many online courses taken through local community classes are also offered in the hybrid format. This involves both online and classroom time. Many students prefer hybrid classes because it gives them the chance to meet with their professor and get to know him or her at the personal level while still taking most of the course at the student's own free time at home.
Online Speech Course Topics
Online speech courses expose students to the theories and practices of speech communication behaviors. Students will study the communications process and characteristics of competent speech. They will learn to deliver speeches and demonstrate effective conflict management skills. In many speech classes and on tests, instructors will provide a broad topic, such as how to maintain a car or how to train a dog, and the student will have to use clear language and a persuasive argument to explain the topic in a coherent manner.
Students will develop skills in selecting and using a variety of communication strategies based on situational goals, contexts and human needs. Through the in-class activities, students will improve their skills in employment interviewing, listening, group communications, problem-solving and creative brainstorming.
