Psycholinguistics: Course Description

Did you ever wonder how an idea, once it's formed in a person's brain, turns into sound and finds its way into another person's brain? And how, once there, does that sound gets reinterpreted so the idea is understood? This process is called the study of Psycholinguistics. MIT undergraduate students or anyone interested in the Brain and Cognitive Sciences can take this 'Psycholinguistics' class and study the steps in that language transference process. Along the way, students will be asked what connects thoughts and language, how language is attained and how we access stored words and their meanings. Through a mixture of psychology and linguistics, students learn the complex links between thought and language. 'Psycholinguistics' was taught in a lecture format by MIT professor Edward Gibson. He has offered OpenCourseWare students a link to a previous version of this class and translations in simplified and traditional Chinese and in Spanish.

This MIT free course offers students lecture notes, class assignments and an extensive reading list that includes articles from some of the major journals in the Brain and Cognitive Sciences field. For anyone interested in 'Psycholinguistics,' visit this psychology and linguistics course page.
