Wayne State University is a 4-year, public school located in the metropolitan area of Detroit, Michigan. The school is the only urban public research university in Michigan and offers nearly 350 degree programs to more than 31,000 students each year.

Wayne State University was originally founded in 1868 and sits in Detroit's Midtown Cultural Center. It also has six satellite centers surrounding the metropolitan Detroit region. The university has 13 different academic colleges and schools, including the Wayne State University School of Medicine, the nation's largest single-campus medical school. The medical school is ranked 22nd out of 125 of the nation's top medical schools by the National Science Foundation.

Wayne State University is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a Research Intensive University. It is also one of the largest international universities in the state, drawing more than 3,000 international students from 100 different countries across the globe.

Admissions and Enrollment Overview

Students interested in enrolling at Wayne State University as incoming freshmen must hold high school diplomas or the equivalent GED certification. The school determines its freshmen population by high school grade point average, which must be at least a 2.75, as well as ACT or SAT scores, which must be at least 21 or 990, respectively.

Campus Learning Environment and Facilities

The University Cultural Center in Detroit is home not only to Wayne State University, but also to several museums, theaters and art galleries. The university campus takes up 203 acres and is comprised of over 100 academic and administrative buildings. The Wayne State University Library System holds the 68th largest collection in the nation and contains nearly 3.4 million volumes.

Students attending Wayne State University have the option to choose from between 126 bachelor's, 139 master's and about 60 doctoral degree and certificate programs. Each program provides students with access to computer centers, academic classrooms and state-of-the-art laboratories for clinical study.
