Introduction to Mental Health and Disaster Preparedness: Course Description

When a natural disaster occurs, it's easy to diagnose and treat the resulting physical injuries. Mental health disorders resulting from disasters and other stressful situations often go unnoticed, resulting in mental health problems like binge drinking, depression and anxiety. This OpenCourseWare, offered by Johns Hopkins University's School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, provides a guide for identifying victims of mental health issues and treatment options. Students will learn how to best offer psychological first aid to crisis and disaster survivors. They will also learn the importance of assessing patients' needs to determine what type of treatment is warranted. Johns Hopkins University professor, Cindy Parker, M.D., M.P.H., identifies the importance of having an emergency plan in place to meet both the physical and mental needs of disaster victims.
