Students taking part in MIT's 'Hydrofoils and Propellers' OpenCourseWare project will learn about the theory and design of hydrofoil systems and wake-adapted propellers. Topics to be discussed in class include lifting and thickness problems of sub-cavitating sections and unsteady flow problems. A background in Mechanical Engineering is required for successful completion of the course.

Hydrofoils and Propellers: Course Description

'Hydrofoils and Propellers' is offered by Professor Dr. Richard Kimball and is designed for students with in interest in the design of hydrofoils. Topics covered in the class include lifting line and lifting surface theory as it applies to hydrofoil craft, control surface, rudder, propeller and wind turbine rotor design. Other topics discussed include numerical principles of vortex lattice, the design and analysis of wind turbine rotors and unsteady flow problems.
