Exploring the English Language: Course Description

The course examines the change the English language underwent from the 15th to the 19th century. It further looks at the political, social and linguistic developments that brought about these changes. To understand the linguistic changes, however, a basic grammar understanding is necessary and the course first provides a grammar primer. Specific course topics include lexicography, word classes, etymology and standardization.

This OpenCourseWare includes grammar exercises, interactive slides, course readings, discussion questions, brief and comical language videos, and hyperlinks to related course material. If you're interested in taking this free course, visit the English language exploration course page.
