Form and Uses of Language: Course Description

Language, both spoken and written, is used in different ways depending upon the context. A formal corporate memorandum uses different language than a personal letter, for example. This course examines the variety of functions and purposes language serves by studying them in the light of poet Siegfried Sasoon. The course begins with a brief biography of Sasoon and then goes into explications of his prose and poetry. Specific topics include using poetry, conveying meaning, Sasoon's protest and the early years among other topics. The original course was designed primarily for English students.

This OpenCourseWare includes lecture notes, discussion questions and an audio reading of one Sasoon poem. If you're interested in taking this free course, visit the language forms and uses course page.
