Biological Agents of Water and Foodborne Bioterrorism: Course Description

This OpenCourseWare is presented by lecturer Kellogg Schwab at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Public Health Preparedness. The 'Biological Agents of Water and Foodborne Bioterrorism' course is presented as a series of five lectures. In these lectures, students will study the use microbes may play as biological weapons, microorganisms that might be used by terrorists and the classification of these microorganisms, as well as specific examples of microbial threats to the food and water supply. Examples of the threats discussed in the course include smallpox, plague, botulism and hemorrhagic fevers. Students will also study the preparedness and response plans developed by the Center for Disease Control with regards to these, and other, biological agents of water and foodborne bioterrorism. The social aspects of terror attacks on the food and water supply are also studied, including hoarding and widespread panic and social disorder.
