Webmaster certification programs are not offered at many colleges, but certificate programs are available. Students choose to specialize in Web design or development and learn how to use specialized software. Proficient webmasters can seek certification from professional organizations.

Requirements to Enroll in a Webmaster Certificate Program

Students seeking webmaster certification can enroll in webmaster certificate programs, which are offered by many community colleges and some 4-year universities. Although requirements vary, many colleges don't have specific enrollment requirements. Most expect students to be familiar with the Internet and basic computer applications.

Many programs are designed for adults seeking professional development and have flexible scheduling options. Some webmaster certificate programs are taught entirely online; students in these programs may be required to own computers that meet minimum specifications and to purchase software.

Requirements to Complete a Webmaster Certificate Program

Webmaster certificate programs usually take less than a year to complete and consist of about five courses. Students use common Web design applications, like Dreamweaver, and learn basic computer programming.

Many programs offer two possible tracks in either website design or development. Students who focus on design learn how to evaluate a client's needs and design a useful and attractive website. They also learn how to integrate audio, video and interactivity into the site. Courses in the design track might include instruction in cascading style sheets, Flash and basic Web design.

The developer track is more technical and includes instruction in programming. Students learn how to set up content management systems and use SQL and JavaScript. They work with servers and databases.

Many webmaster certificate programs require students to complete a final project. Students typically create a website for their final project, using the skills they learned over the course of the certificate program.

Webmaster Certification

Although most schools do not offer certification programs, certification for webmasters is available from some organizations. The Certified Internet Web Professional Program offers several certifications, including one for Web managers. Webmasters can also seek certification in specific products or programming languages. For example, certification is available in Java programming. Webmasters usually must pass an exam in order to earn certification.
