Trace-Element Geochemistry: Course Description

Igneous rocks are formed when magma, or molten rock, cools. 'Trace-Element Geochemistry' explores multiple methods of extracting minute traces of chemical elements, including partial melting and fractional crystallization, from igneous rocks. The course examines the theoretical foundations of these methods, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. Chemistry and Geology students will have the opportunity to discover the geochemistry of igneous rock systems by studying the geochemical behavior of elements uncovered in the extraction process. This graduate-level course is taught by Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professor Frederick Frey.

Notes from lectures and discussion questions are available for download on the course website. If you're interested in taking this free online course, visit the trace element geochemistry course page.
