Architects are required to complete a professional degree program from an accredited school.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, www.bls.gov, the National Architectural Accrediting Board accredits 114 degree programs. Upon completion of a degree program, architects participate in a 3-year supervised internship. This allows them to become licensed through the appropriate state agencies and sit for the Architect Registration Exam.
5-Year Bachelor's Degree Program in Architecture
Most architects choose this route in gaining their professional degree. It is the fastest and most direct route to becoming an architect. This type of Architecture degree program does not require any previous knowledge or experience in Architecture.
2-Year Master's Degree Program in Architecture
This traditional master's degree in Architecture is designed for those with an Architecture undergraduate degree. Architects looking to specialize in an area, such as health facility design, landscape architecture or 'green' building designs, often pursue this type of graduate degree program in Architecture.
3- or 4-Year Master's Degree Program in Architecture
Professionals with an undergraduate degree in a field outside of Architecture can complete this type of master's degree program. It is designed for students with undergraduate degrees in other disciplines.
