Thinking about Architecture (In History and At Present): Course Description

This course on Architecture theory thoroughly probes the many connections between the history, practice and theory of Architecture. It examines how these principles all relate to architects and their understanding of their craft. The class includes three main sections. The first focuses on defining an architect and the architect's role within society. The second explores the principles and theories that form the foundation of Architecture and then links them to the issues that aesthetics have raised over the centuries. The third helps clarify the meanings behind modernist and post-modernist thought. Originally taught by Professor Mark Jarzombek, the course was lecture-style. This course is part of the Master of Science in Architecture Studies curriculum at MIT.

This free online course includes examples of a student's work, class paper and debate topic assignments and lists of recommended readings. For more information on this Architecture course or courses like it, visit this modern and historical architectural theory course page.
