Architects create physical structures used for a multitude of purposes, including residential properties, retail outlets, office buildings and restaurants. Training requirements for the architecture profession include a degree, such as a Bachelor of Science in Architecture or a Master in Architecture, an internship and a licensing exam.

Architect Career Summary

Architects plan and design all sorts of structures, including homes, skyscrapers, shopping malls and performing arts venues. They are responsible for both the aesthetic look and the structural integrity of the structure and must possess artistic ability and technical knowledge of physics and construction. Architects begin a project by working with the client to determine the needs of the structure. After creating the design, they work with contractors, construction teams, engineers and other professionals to complete the structure.

Education Required for the Architecture Profession

To become a professional architect, most states require individuals to complete an architectural degree program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. Some programs are offered as 5-year bachelor's degree programs, allowing students to complete the degree in the shortest amount of time. Alternately, students can complete a 4-year bachelor's degree program followed by a 2- or 3-year master's degree program. Typical coursework in an architecture program includes architectural history and theory, building methods and materials, construction technology, structural design and computer-aided drawing.

Job Training and Certifications Required for the Architecture Profession

All states require individuals to become licensed in order to practice as professional architects. To be eligible for licensing, aspiring architects must complete a training period averaging three years. Many aspiring architects complete an internship with a licensed architect. The Architect Registration Examination, administered by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), www.ncarb.org, is the standard licensing exam. The NCARB also offers voluntary certification for architects. In most states, architects must complete continuing education credits to maintain their license.
