Thermodynamics for Geoscientists: Course Description
In this free OpenCourseWare from MIT, students will learn how the principles of thermodynamics can be applied to the study of igneous and metamorphic rocks. 'Thermodynamics for Geoscientists' teaches physicists and geologists to apply heat conversions to investigate the formation and development of rocks. Elements of thermodynamics covered in the course include phase equilibrium of homogeneous and heterogeneous systems and thermodynamic models of non-ideal crystalline solutions. Students will also explore how these processes occur in the unique conditions under the Earth's crust and mantle. This lecture-based course is taught by MIT Professor Timothy Grove.
Lecture notes and problem sets are available for download on the course website. To learn more, visit the thermodynamics for geoscientists course page.
