Strategic HR Management: Course Description
In MIT's 'Strategic HR Management' OpenCourseWare, students learn to think strategically about managing personnel and how to implement strong human resources policies. The course avoids the technical details of personnel management, such as job evaluation and employment law, focusing instead on the broader strategic perspective of a general manager. The course is divided into three major sections, using real world case studies to demonstrate successful and unsuccessful implementation of the concepts introduced in each section. The course begins by introducing human resources strategies, emphasizing the importance of consistent policies and behavior. The second section explores tools that are available to help implement these strategies, including training, communication, team management and compensation. Finally, students will have an opportunity to integrate the information they have learned by studying the effective deployment of a work force. This graduate-level course is taught by Professors Paul Osterman and Diane Burton of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management.
