Social Theory and Analysis: Course Description

This graduate level course exploring the development of social theories over the past few centuries, is offered by the Department of Anthropology at MIT in Cambridge, MA. The course looks at early nineteenth century, classical social theories while examining their origins and development. It asks whether such theories can still be utilized today. Students then survey new social theories used to explain contemporary society. This course discusses how social theories can be engendered by media, culture, ecology and communities. After completing this course, students should be able to explain the evolution of social theory and formulate original social theories and analyses. Anthropology professor Dr. Michael M. J. Fischer teaches this course. Students must have access to an Internet connection and the required readings.
