Computer Technology Degree: Requirements to Enroll in and Complete a Computer Technology Degree
Programs in computer technology prepare students for careers performing a range of functions, such as creating advanced electronic devices, managing data, providing field service and implementing hardware and software for numerous applications. Programs are commonly offered at the associate's and bachelor's degree level. Read on to find out more about enrolling in and completing a computer technology degree.
Enrolling in a Computer Technology Degree Program
Computer technology degree programs are offered at the associate's and bachelor's level in networking technology, information technology, application development, computer engineering, Internet and multimedia and general technology. Admission is generally open to students who have earned a high school diploma or the equivalent. Some programs may require proficiency in related areas, such as computer literacy and calculus.
Programs may require a minimum high school grade point average or base their admission on SAT or ACT scores. A few programs may require a personal interview for admission. A growing number of programs are offering portions or all of the required coursework online. Admission requirements for online programs are generally similar to on-campus programs. However, students will need access to a computer and Internet service.
Completing a Computer Technology Degree Program
Associate's degree programs in computer technology usually take two years to complete. Students take courses in computer systems design, electronic systems, installation, testing and evaluation techniques and the tools and equipment used to maintain computer systems.
In a bachelor's degree program, students take liberal arts coursework in addition to the Computer Technology curriculum. Courses in mathematics, analytical methods, electronic circuits and devices, digital circuits, networking, software design and computer programming may be offered. Students might participate in a senior project or other hands-on training opportunities. Students are generally able to complete a bachelor's degree program within four years of full-time study.
