Power and Negotiation: Course Description

Negotiation techniques are invaluable to business managers and executives, whether they are brokering contracts with large corporations or dividing up responsibilities within a team setting. This free course presents modern negotiation approaches and bargaining strategies to students pursuing a Master of Business Administration degree. Professor Michele Williams presents negotiation exercises from a variety of business management situations, allowing students to gain first-hand experience applying strategic theories from lectures and course readings to real-life business administration scenarios. Course topics include integrative bargaining, long-term relationship negotiations and multiparty negotiations. This class discards the stereotypes of hard-line, aggressive bargaining and replaces them with theories of emotional intelligence, social capital and barriers to communication. By the end of the course, students will have the interpersonal skills needed to analyze a negotiation situation, apply effective bargaining strategies and build their social capital, ensuring future successes as a negotiator. The course is given in a lecture style format.
