Political Economy I (Theories of the State and the Economy): Course Description

A country's politics and its economy are inextricably linked. The government's attitude toward concerns like citizens' rights and social growth directly impacts labor, commerce, production and all aspects of business. The original 'Political Economy I: Theories of the State and the Economy' seminar course was taught by Professors Suzanne Berger and Michael Piore. MIT offered this optional grad-level course to students pursuing a Master of Science in Management Studies, Master of Science in Economics or Master of Science in Political Science. The course looked at several approaches to political economy through the writings of influential economists and philosophers. The important writings included Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto, John Locke's Second Treatise on Civil Government and John Maynard Keynes' General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money. The accompanying study questions provoked further thought and in-class discussions about the readings.

This OpenCourseWare includes a reading list, study questions, essay assignments and hyperlinks to related course material. To find out more about this class, visit the political and economic theories course page.
