Home Economics Teacher: How to Become a Home Economics Teacher

If you 're interested in helping adolescents develop important household management skills, you may wish to consider a career as a Home Economics Teacher. A bachelor's degree in education and state certification can lead to a position teaching home economics at middle or high schools. Additional education will be necessary in order to teach home economics at a postsecondary school.

Home Economics Teacher Duties

Home Economics Teachers help students develop important life skills. Home Economics Teachers primarily work with students at middle schools, high schools and postsecondary institutions. Their duties include developing, implementing and revising a curriculum that focuses on child care, nutrition, money management, family and interpersonal relations, cooking, sewing and good hygiene. Home Economics Teachers must also moderate class discussion, stay on top of the latest news and developments in home economics, attend professional conferences, maintain student records, advise students and evaluate assignments.

Education Required to Become a Home Economics Teacher

A bachelor's degree in secondary education or family & consumer science education is the minimum requirement to become a middle or high school Home Economics Teacher. Some employers may require a Master of Arts in Family & Consumer Sciences or a Master of Arts in Secondary Education within a few years of hire. Home Economics Teachers with graduate degrees are often paid a higher salary. Those who want to teach home economics at a postsecondary level need to complete at least a master's degree program.

Certifications Required to Become a Home Economics Teacher

Home Economics Teachers who work at the K-12 level need state certification. To meet certification requirements in most states, teachers must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and pass a licensing exam. The U.S. Department of Education, www.ed.gov, provides information on state licensing and renewal requirements. Home Economics Teachers can also take the National Family & Consumer Sciences Examination in order to obtain national certification from the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences www.aafcs.org. This certification makes Home Economics Teachers more marketable .
