Neuroscience and Behavior: Course Description

In this Neuroscience course, students learn about neurons and how they work. The course asks: what happens in the brain when mammals sleep and dream? What happens when they encounter positive rewards or negative feedback? And what happens in the brain when we make conscious, deliberate movements or unconscious, instinctual movements? The class also focuses on some of the top scientists in the field of Neuroscience. Students are asked to look critically at these neuroscientists' contributions to the discipline and find out how their discoveries changed the direction of this field of study. MIT professor Gerald Schneider taught 'Neuroscience and Behavior' for students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Brain and Cognitive Sciences.

This OpenCourseWare offering includes audio lectures as MP3s or via Internet streaming, several quizzes and exams, a reading list with study questions, study materials with additional student and lecture questions, two writing assignments and material from a previous version of the class. If you or someone you know is interested in ethology, the study of animal behavior, you might enjoy this behavior and neuroscience course page.
