Many nail technicians earn degrees, such as an Associate of Science in Cosmetology with an emphasis in manicure and pedicure. These programs provide students with the skills to become licensed nail technicians at salons, spas or other outlets. Nail Technician Degree Programs

Aspiring nail technicians may choose to enroll in an associate's degree in cosmetology program. This and similar programs offer an emphasis for nail technicians or a separate certificate program in manicure and pedicure. Students will learn general salon practices, nail care, application techniques and safety and sanitation regulations. Most students who complete an associate's degree program are prepared for state licensing exams allowing them to practice as nail technicians. The following are descriptions of some of the courses included in the curriculum of a nail technician program:

  • Safety and Sanitation: This course covers basic practices for maintaining a safe and sanitary work station including EPA and OSHA requirements.
  • State Law and Requirements: Some programs cover the specific laws and regulations of their state preparing students for state licensing.
  • Anatomy and Physiology: Students learn about skin composition, bone structure and disorders of hands and feet.
  • Product Knowledge: Students learn the ingredients, traits and uses of standard industry products.
