Involving the Family in Supporting Pupils' Literacy Learning: Course Specifics

This free OpenLearn course offered through the Open University explores the relationship between families and their children's literacy development. Those using this course will study the five common partnership arrangements formed between parents or guardians and their children's schools. These include the expert model, the transplant model, the consumer model, the empowerment model and the negotiating model. Online learners also will see how parents' willingness to take part in literacy programs often is affected by such issues as how they are invited to join the program and what they are required to do. They also will explore how schools can meet the literacy needs of students from diverse family and cultural backgrounds.

Activities, readings and a list of reference materials are available for free online. If you're interested in taking this course, visit the involving the family in supporting pupils' literacy learning course page.
