Key Skill Assessment Unit: Information Literacy: Course Description

What good is having information if you don't have the skills to use it effectively? This course can help students to enhance and acquire such skills. 'Key Skill Assessment Unit: Information Literacy' can guide students through a process that has the goal of creating a portfolio of work (prior and current) which can demonstrate the student's skills in this area. Through the use of readings, the application of specific criteria and the use of a checklist outlining the ways in which students' work can demonstrate proficiency in this area, the course takes students on a structured assessment of their Information Literacy skills. Such skills include being able to discern where there is an information 'gap' and knowing what type of information will fill that gap, possessing skills to manage information resources, being able to evaluate information in a critical way and being able to effectively present information to others. This course, which is not part of any one degree program, could supplement the work of any student (or interested person). The course is intended to be worked on for an hour a week over 50 weeks.

The readings, checklist and other course materials are all available online for free. To take this course, visit the information literacy course page.
