Fundamentals of Epidemiology I: Course Description

Instructors Sukon Kanchanaraksa and Marie Diener-West from the Department of Epidemiology teach this free course. The OpenCourseWare material is based on several lectures that cover a variety of subjects, including the characteristics of disease and how to use rates, ratios and proportions and the usage of clinical life tables in the measurement and description of disease issues. Students will also be introduced to epidemiological study models and how they are used for assessing and evaluating the relationship between known risk factors and disease outcomes. Upon successful completion of this course students will have the skills and abilities to perform a variety of tasks, including performing disease analysis, utilizing descriptive statistics, explaining how epidemiology is used in the field of genetics and describing the affects of epidemiology on public health policy.
