Psychiatric Epidemiology: Course Description
Study the history of mental and psychiatric disorders, their causes and the frequency at which new cases are diagnosed today. This OpenCourseWare taught by Johns Hopkins University's School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, introduces students to a variety of psychiatric disorders and the characteristics of those who are most likely to develop them. Understand the effects of race, gender, age, marital status and geography on the frequency of psychiatric disorders. Study disorders like dementia, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder throughout history and across countries and continents. Students learn techniques to measure the rate of the growth of psychiatric epidemiology and the reliability of these measurements. Using statistics and their knowledge of mental disorders, students will be able to develop surveys and studies that can aid in the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders. Taught by professor Johns Hopkins University professor William Eaton, Ph.D., this course psychiatric epidemiology also delves into symptoms of psychiatric disorders.
