'Family Finance' is a personal finance OpenCourseWare that examines an entire household's needs, rather than an individual. The free OpenCourseWare content came from the original Utah State University (USU) course titled 'Family Finance', which is part of the bachelor's degree program in Family Life Studies. This course encouraged students to put financial plans they created into action.

Family Finance: Course Description

USU Professor Alena Johnson taught the original 'Family Finance' in a lecture-style format. The course, required for students earning their bachelor's degree in Family Life Studies, provided practical lessons in financial goal setting, financial planning and prudent spending. Emphasis was on setting and achieving goals according to personal values. Lectures covering insurance, investments, retirement planning, taxes, debt and major expenses formed the core of the course. The OpenCourseWare contains PDF notes for all of Professor Johnson's presentations. In addition, available exercises involve budgets, expenses, mortgages, credit cards, income taxes, financial checkups and comparison shopping for big-ticket items. The OpenCourseWare syllabus provides guidelines for each exercise.

The OpenCourseWare includes exercises, lecture summaries, a brief lecturer biography and a bibliography of readings. To take 'Family Finance,' go to the family financial planning course page.
