Electronic & Mechanical Properties of Materials: Course Description
'Electronic & Mechanical Properties of Materials' OpenCourseWare is divided into two units - mechanical properties (elasticity, viscoelasticity, plasticity and fracture) and magnetic, optical and electrical properties. Specific lecture titles for the second unit include conductivity, electromagnetic waves in materials, wave-particle duality, energy levels, Fermi-Dirac, band gaps, Bloch model, metals and insulators, semiconductors, doping and conductivity, p-n junctions, dielectrics and polarization, magnetic materials and optical fiber properties. The roles of bonding, structure and composition in controlling physical properties are covered. There are case studies related to optical detectors and semiconductor diodes, thin films, cellular and composites materials, sensors and biomaterials. Professors Lorna Gibson and Eugene Fitzgerald developed the original 'Electronic & Mechanical Properties of Materials' course at MIT, which was given in a lecture format. This course is required for students pursuing a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degree.
'Electronic and Mechanical Properties' OpenCourseWare includes 12 lecture slides and four problem sets from the magnetic, optical and properties unit, a topic outline for elasticity topics, exams for the years 2001 to 2007 and solutions (2007 only) for the mechanical properties unit and exams for the years 2003 to 2007 and solutions (2003-2006) for the magnetic, optical and electrical unit in .pdf format available for download.
