Conservation degree programs encompass a wide range of concentrations that may fall under different academic categories, such as ecosystem science and management, environmental science or natural resource conservation. At many schools, students choose a specific area of concentration, such as forestry, rangeland, fish or wildlife conservation. The primary focus of all conservation degree programs is the stewardship of natural resources. Ohio State University, the University of Minnesota and Texas A&M University are three schools that offer conservation degrees.

Conservation Degree Program Details

Associate's Degree in Conservation

The associate's degree program, which commonly leads to an Associate in Applied Science in Natural Resource Conservation, introduces students to fundamental subjects of ecosystem conservation, including botany, fish and wildlife biology, land and aquatic ecology, soil science and forestry. Degree holders may transfer into a 4-year bachelor's degree program or find work as fish and wildlife officers, park rangers, water plant managers, land surveyors, forest technicians and fire crew members.

Bachelor's Degree in Conservation

A bachelor's degree program in conservation and resource studies is an interdisciplinary course of study that combines biological sciences with social sciences such as economics, sociology and political science. Graduates may find work in the public and non-profit sectors for government agencies, state parks and nonprofit conservation groups, or the private sector, with law firms, developers and ecotourism companies.

Master's degree in Conservation

A master's degree program in conservation biology and sustainable development enables students to gain the knowledge and skills needed to advance strategies for conserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable living. The program combines science with the study of the economic and social dimensions of development. This degree is often offered jointly with a doctor of laws (J.D.) degree for students who wish to work in the field of environmental regulation or policy.

Doctoral Degree in Conservation

A Ph.D. (in Forestry and Natural Resources, for instance) is required for such positions as senior researcher, staff specialist or university professor. Students in a doctoral program specialize in specific areas of study, such as fisheries and aquaculture, natural resources recreation and tourism, forest management or wildlife ecology management.
