Chronic Infection and Inflammation: Course Details

'Chronic Infection and Inflammation: What are the Consequences on Your Health?' is a free OpenCourseWare package offered by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Building on lectures developed by Professors Eva Frickel and Sara Gredmark, the class provides an overview of many chronic diseases caused by pathogens, such as bacteria or viruses. Lecture notes explain how pathogens, like the HPV virus, Helicobacter pylori bacterium and Cytomeglaovirus trigger chronic illnesses, such as cervical cancer, gastric problems and atherosclerosis. The course takes a look at these pathogens, their actions and the body's response to them at a detailed, molecular level. The course concludes by discussing how vaccines, medicines and new treatments are developed to destroy these pathogens and cure infections and inflammation caused by pathogens. This undergraduate level class is part of a Bachelor of Science in Biology curriculum and for students entering the health care profession in the future. This OpenCourseWare is for students with an advanced knowledge of college-level science.

This free OpenCourseWare includes a syllabus, course schedule, summary of lectures and descriptions of course assignments. If you'd like to learn more, check out the 'Chronic Infection and Inflammation: What are the Consequences on Your Health?' course page.
