Statistical Methods in Brain and Cognitive Science: Course Description

Through the use of statistical analysis, students in this course can learn to design experiments that measure the cognitive abilities of patients with degenerative brain diseases and brain disorders. They study several basic, long-standing testing methods, including correlation and t-tests, and they analyze the thought processes that went into the crafting of those methods. Rather than just administering a cognitive test and accepting the results, students are asked to stretch the problem-solving area in their brains and evaluate the underlying statistics to think up ways of improving what is already being done. 'Statistical Methods in Brain and Cognitive Science' is one of the classes offered for MIT students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Brain and Cognitive Sciences. Originally taught by Dr. Ruth Rosenholtz with contributions from Dr. Peter Tse, this class was held over an 8-week period with three 1-hour weekly sessions. To get the most benefit from these class materials, learners will need MATLAB software to review and run .mat files.

Included with this online course are extensive lecture notes, homework assignments using MATLAB software, practice exams, quiz problems and a final. To learn more about this class or others like it, visit this statistics in neuroscience course site.
