Probability and Statistics in Engineering: Course Description

Probability is, simply put, the branch of mathematics concerned with calculating how likely it will be for a certain event to occur. Probability is of particular importance to the world of engineering where huge amounts of money and, more importantly, human lives are at risk because of the nature of engineering projects. A bridge, for example, is a huge expense for a government. Before putting time, money and resources into the structure, the government must determine the best location, materials and company for the job. Many travelers will be using the bridge, so the bridge must be safe. Probability is helpful for all aspects of this example by evaluating raw data collected concerning the bridge and making important risk assessments and how likely a particular problem, such as collapsing, will happen. Specific topics include decision analysis, probability, random processes, random vectors and variables, risk-based decision and Bayesian analysis, simple and multi-linear regressions and uncertainty propagation among others. Professor Daniele Veneziano taught the original graduate-level course in a lecture-style format through MIT's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Knowledge of linear algebra and calculus is desirable.
