Guidance counseling degree programs prepare individuals to counsel students from kindergarten through 12th grade. A master's degree in guidance counseling is the widely accepted benchmark degree for guidance counselors. Although some degree programs may offer one or two classes online, most are traditional, on-campus degree programs.

Guidance Counseling Master's Degree Course Curriculum

A master's degree program in guidance counseling trains counselors to assess each student's needs and offer appropriate social and educational advice for that child. Students enrolled in a master's degree program in guidance counseling will study human growth and development, counseling ethics, group counseling for children, multicultural counseling and psychology. This graduate program typically lasts two years and requires the completion of a supervised guidance counseling practicum.

Upon graduation, graduates must also pass licensure examinations in order to practice within public schools. As a guidance counselor, one will help students choose classes, career options and possible colleges and universities. Courses in the program include:

  • Abnormal Psychology Students learn about abnormal psychological behaviors and how to treat those behaviors in a school setting.
  • Family Therapy Strategies Guidance counselors learn how to counsel students and their families.
