A graduate certificate leads to a paraprofessional position, while a licensed counselor must have a master's degree. Licensed counselors can enroll in a professional certificate program or complete a Ph.D. program to pursue an advanced career. Several schools offer online Guidance Counseling degree programs, such as Oregon State, the University of Massachusetts and the University of Tennessee.
Online Graduate Certificate Program in Counseling
A few programs offer post-master's or graduate certificates in school counseling or counseling education. Post-master's certificate programs are for licensed counselors. Graduate certificate programs prepare students for entry-level careers as counseling paraprofessionals assisting licensed counselors. Coursework includes cross-cultural counseling, career counseling and counseling theory.
Online Master's Degree in Counseling
A Master of Arts in Counseling online program teaches students how to encourage the academic, personal, social and career development of adolescents and children. Similar programs include a M.Ed. in School Counseling or an M.S. in Education Counseling. The curriculum includes courses in child and adolescent counseling, group counseling, abnormal psychology, counseling theory, multicultural counseling, family therapy and ethics. Some programs require a practicum or internship. Schools that offer online master's programs in counseling sometimes require occasional campus visits.
Online Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Counseling
The Ph.D. program in Counseling is designed for those students who already have master's degrees in counseling or a related field. Coursework includes advanced classes in theory, practice, career counseling, group counseling, social justice, diversity, consultation and counselor education. The Ph.D. program prepares students for counselor supervision and education or advanced practice. Some online doctoral programs require occasional in-class attendance.
