Network technicians (or network techs) must possess at least an associate's degree in computer technology; however, employers may prefer candidates who have a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related emphasis. Those with more education and experience can expect higher salaries in the field.

Network Tech Career Summary

Network technicians help in the creation, implementation and maintenance of network systems, which includes performance monitoring, problem-solving and disaster recovery. Network techs work in a variety of settings, such as government institutions, hospitals, educational facilities, communication industries and financial institutions. Many jobs demand that network techs work some evening and weekend hours in addition to rotating shifts of on-call availability.

Educational requirements generally include a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field in addition to 2-5 years of network experience. However, employers often consider individuals with both an associate degree and work experience. College classes typically include network security, network design, project management and database administration. Employers may require incoming or established network techs to possess industry certifications, such as the Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, CompTIA A+ or CompTIA Network+.
