For an in-depth look at the calculus principles beyond single-variable calculus, this free OpenCourseWare class is a useful resource. Offered by MIT, the online version of 'Multivariable Calculus' makes a great deal of course material available to online users, including several Java applets that help students to visualize and experiment with the principles discussed in the course. The course is geared toward undergraduate Mathematics majors who have already taken a course in single-variable calculus or anyone looking to expand their knowledge of calculus and advanced mathematics.

Multivariable Calculus: Course Description

This is the second of a two-part series of freshman calculus courses. 'Multivariable Calculus' is most useful to undergraduate students working on bachelor's degrees in Mathematics. Professor Denis Auroux, of MIT, focuses the lectures and course material on multi-variable calculus and vector calculus. Primary topics are vectors and matrices, partial derivatives and integrals. More specific topics include determinants, velocity and acceleration, differentials, gradient, flux and divergence. The course offers so-called 'mathlets,' small Java applets used to help students visualize the applications of course topics. These applets can be used to simulate space and surface fluxes, vector curves and more and are a great way to help students stay engaged in this challenging course.

Course materials include detailed lecture notes, full video lectures with transcripts, problem sets, practice exams with solutions and interactive applications. For more information, see the multivariable calculus course page.
